This is the story of Ben Carson a suspended police officer who gets a job as the nightwatchman at the department store Mayflower which is closed down due to a fire. Ben noticed aside from the entire inside being completely gutted by a fire that all the mirrors are spotless. As the night goes on all runs smooth, until his first round through the building by himself, as he makes his rounds he comes across a giant mirror in the lobby and begins to notice hand prints all over the mirror(which was spotless earlier) and he begins to try and clean the mirror but the hand prints won't wash off, as he continues to clean the mirror he hears a woman scream, he follows the scream which bring him to a dressing room where their is no one, he then realizes that he can only see this person through a mirror. This continues until one night as Ben Carson is at work, his sister Angela(Amy Smart)is at home taking a bath and as she prepares for her bath she is looking at herself in the, but as she turns away her reflections stay their and stares at her, now as she is in the bathtub here reflection acts of it's own accord and grab the upper and lower parts of it's own jaw and begins to pull and the a real Angela feels the effects as her lower jaw is completely torn of from her head. When Ben finds out she is dead he goes back to the Mayflower and tries to break the mirrors unsuccessfully as it repairs itself, he becomes frustrated and yell "What do you want from me" and the glass begins to crack and it spells the name "ESSEKER".
Ben has detective friend of his look up the Name Esseker and it comes back a girl named Anna Esseker , who was patient at St. Matthews Metal Hospital, which is conveniently located underneath the MAYFLOWER. Ben get her file and it says that she was killed while in the hospital but at further inspection, he find that her Dr. had doctored(no pun intended) her file and she was actually released two days before the supposed accident. Ben tracks her down and Anna is living in a Monastery where mirrors are banned, She tells Ben that the Dr. had diagnosed her with split personality and as a way to cure her put her in a room with mirrors all around her, this was supposed to make her confront the other perosnality which would cure her, as it really turns out to be Anna was actually possessed and the demon had left her and went into the mirrors and had been awaiting her return since, Ben the explains to her what is going and what has happened to the other nightwatchmen and he tell about his sister and his family she says she would pray for him and his family and that was all she could do, then at this point Ben takes Anna at gunpoint from the monastery and back to the MAYFLOWER.
He takes Anna into the basement of the MAYFLOWER and she goes into the room with mirrors and she sits their you can see the demons pushing at the glass(a lot like when Freddy in a nightmare on elms street pushes on the wall) at which point all hell breaks loose and the demons reenter Anna and she becomes possessed and tried and kills Ben after lengthy little battle Ben finally overcomes Anna and kills her, but also becoming trapped inside the building and the audience thinks he is dead, but this is Keifer Sutherland they won't kill him off will they? Nope, but he also isn't in this world anymore, Ben has passed between worlds and is now inside the mirrors.
Alexandre Aja directed this remake(his second remake) and he could have done a lot much better, after his film Haute Tension, he could've done a lot of things and the two films he chooses next are remakes, his first The Hills Have Eyes which was a good film the original was way better, I would suggest save your money and just buy the original and of course the current movie under the microscope Mirrors.
Mirrors is a halfway decent horror film for a polished Hollywood release. One thing I did like about it was that even though it did have a well-known lead(Keifer Sutherland) it was still able to build suspense, as an avid fan of horror I have come to find that most horror movies that have well-known celebrities usually don't build enough tension and suspense, because for the most part you know that chances are they will live in some way or another. Now for anyone who didn't know this is a remake of an Asian film called INTO THE MIRROR, I personally have not seen the original, but more likely than not it is probably better that the remake, but as it is I am reviewing the remake and will try to stay on topic.
The ending was a quite a bit predictable, as you know chances of them killing Keifer off are slim, but at the same time it is horror movie and they want to end on a down note. All in all though it was watchable, I would not buy it and chances are I won't watch it again either it was good but not a two-timer though.
I give it 2 out of 4
Thank you all for reading my review and hope you will return and read more as I post them
